North Guanacaste

North Guanacaste harbors an important portion of the costa rican cultural and natural patrimony. Not in vain there is a significant number of protected areas, including coastal, mountainous, terrestrial, and aquatic ecosystems, where life develops with exuberance.

It is situated in the northern part of the country, and covers the pacific coast of Costa Rica, since the limit with Nicaragua to Punta Cerritos, located 22 km. west from de city of Santa Cruz. It covers an extension of approximately 100 km. of the Pacific Coast. In the past, this region has had its natural vocation in the cattle raising and in the agriculture. Currently, nevertheless, the incomparable beauty of its landscapes, that go from the tropical dry forest to the forest montano low and its hot climate, as well as its fertile nature, have done of Guanacaste one of the most concurred places by the local and international tourism. Besides an important backup in the Pole of Tourist Development of the Papagayo's Gulf, there is the Daniel Oduber International, where a large quantity of flights arrives charter and regular flights from the United States.

South Guanacaste

This Unit includes the southwest coast of the Nicoya Peninsula. Its north limit is the Punta Cerritos and its south with river Bongo outfall, with a length of approximately 110 kilometers in front of the coast.

The main tourist center of the South Guanacaste Unit is the Nicoya city, located at 30 kilometers of the coast that works as a distribution center and stop break for the tourist that travels to the south Guanacaste beaches and the travelers to other passages. The second tourist center is the village of Sámara, located over the coast, which gives it a central position in relation with the whole passage territory.

The main resources of the unit are the beaches. It has a extended potential for the development of beach combined products and natural resources such as the spectacular arriving of the turtles Lora in the Wild Life National Refuge Ostional and the estuary and mangrove swamp of the south side, specially those who divide the beaches of Islita, Bejuco, San Miguel, Coyote and Guiones. The mangrove swamp are excellent conserved and are ideal sites for the bird sight and other type of fauna as well as the practice of light sports as the “kayaking”.

It has an efficient public transportation and well as ferryboats (Paquera community and Naranjo beach), which make the communication between several regions points easy. Similarly, the bridge over the Tempisque River gives a quick access to all the central and south region of the Peninsula.

It also has several airdromes (Tamarindo, Carrillo, Islita) that make possible the quick and safe entrance to the main tourist destinations of south Guanacaste.

Once a separate province of Spain's Central American Empire, Guanacaste has historically played a significant role in the economic and cultural life of Costa Rica. In fact, many traditions considered typical to Costa Rica originated in this province. The folklore and dances from the region are valued as part of the national patrimony, and for that reason the University of Costa Rica has a special branch of its music department located there. “Guanacastecos” descend from the Chorotega Indians, and these original residents still maintain more cultural and historical links to their past than many other Costa Rican residents.

Comprised of a combination of lowland dry forest, vast windswept plains of golden waving grasses and tough flowering shrubs, impressive volcanic mountain ranges, cloud and rain forest, subterranean national parks and of course, miles of coast line, Guanacaste is a land of riches.

Nearly every ecosystem that exists can be found in this province. Even those areas altered by generations of cattle production contain the graceful beauty of the towering shade trees that give the province its name. Some very interesting new projects in the region include Santa Rosa National Park's study of how tropical dry forests regenerate. Local campesinos are being hired by the park system to serve as guides, research assistants and caretakers. Another program in Guanacaste National Park involves doing an inventory of biological diversity within the park, this also by campesino trainees. Apparently both programs have been highly successful due to the residents' familiarity with the region and their powers of observation. Palo Verde National Park itself was once a large and thriving cattle ranch. The Organization for Tropical Studies—or OTS—noted its importance as a bird refuge and it was granted national park status.

GENERAL INFORMACION ABOUT COSTA RICA

HERITAGE AND CULTURE

Costa Rican culture is in many ways a reflection of its racial diversity. The predominant influence has long been European, which is reflected in everything from the official language -- Spanish -- to the architecture of the country's churches and other historic buildings. The indigenous influence is less visible, but can be found in everything from the tortillas that make part of a typical Costa Rican meal, to the handmade ceramics sold at roadside stands.

An important aspect of Costa Rica's cultural legacy is their love for peace and democracy. The Ticos like to stand out that their nation is the exception in Latin America, where military dictatorships have long dominated politics.

They take pride in having more than one hundred years of democratic tradition, and almost half a century without an army. The army was abolished in 1948, and the money the country saves by not expending in military issues is invested in improving the Costa Ricans' standard of living, which has fostered a culture of social peace that makes it such a pleasant place to visit.

THE TICOS

The Ticos, as Costa Ricans are commonly known, are famous for their hospitality, and are quite happy to live up to their reputation. They are well-educated and hard working people, who are quick with a handshake and a smile. They are well aware of the special land they have, and most likely they will help foreigners when they get lost, even explaining things that might seem bizarre to foreigners, and making their stay as enjoyable as possible.

People say the Ticos are their nation's greatest asset, and once you've experienced their friendliness and spontaneity, you'll have no doubt to that regard.

ECOTOURISM - In Costa Rica, nature reveals itself in its entire splendor.

Considered one of the most bio-diverse regions in the world, Costa Rica is divided in 20 natural parks, 8 biological reserves, and a series of protected areas that captivate ecotourism lovers. The variety of activities includes horseback riding, hiking mountainous paths in the cloud forests, and guided bird-watching tours.

Tortuguero National Park is especially famous for sea turtle nesting that takes place every year, and the natural canals that abound with protected species such as crocodiles, manatees, and otters.

ADVENTURE

Costa Rica is a land of volcanoes, rain forests, waterfalls, and rivers. Adventure travelers can choose from a variety of activities such as rafting, snorkeling, kayaking, sport fishing, surfing, and lots more. The most challenging activity will be choosing what to do!

One of Costa Rica's main attractions is the Arenal Volcano. This active volcano will delight lucky visitors with a fire show, with rock and lava eruption. At the volcano's foot, visitors can find one of Costa Rica's best windsurf spots, because winds on the lake can reach 45 miles per hour.

In addition, those looking for a little adrenaline rush can go bungee jumping from the bridge over the Colorado River (located just one half hour from San Jose) or riding in a hot-air balloon.

A VALLEY OF CULTURE

As the capital of the country, San José also represents the capital of culture and amusement. Offering a series of places for all family members to enjoy the museums, theaters, cinemas and recreation centers.

Among the most relevant, the imposing, gothic architecture of the National Theater with performances that include every art gender. The Gold Museum will show you Pre Columbian, Costa Rican art. The National Museum will let you travel through Costa Rica’s history, and the Children’s Museum, guiding you through an interactive learning adventure for all the family, applied with innovative devices on each subject, to learn while you play.
